The Daura Emirate, located in Northern Nigeria, is one of the most prominent religious and traditional states in the region. Governed by a ceremonial hereditary monarch, the Emir of Daura preserves centuries of tradition while maintaining the emirate’s palace as a cultural landmark.Historical Origins
According to the Girgam (the royal chronicle), the Daura Emirate traces its origins as far back as 2000 BC, beginning with Najibu, who migrated with his people from Canaan to Ancient Egypt. After close interactions with the Copts, the group moved through Tripoli and eventually settled in present-day Northern Nigeria, establishing the foundation of the Daura Emirate.
Daura also holds a central place in Hausa mythology. It is the city where Bayajidda, a legendary hero, slew the serpent Sarki at the Kusugu Well, which had prevented the people from accessing water. Out of gratitude, Queen Daurama Shawata married him, and together they gave rise to dynasties that shaped the Hausa Bakwai—the “seven true Hausa states”: Daura, Biram, Kano, Katsina, Zazzau, Gobir, and Rano.
Today, the Kusugu Well, preserved under a wooden shelter, stands as a historic tourist attraction in Daura.Modern History
In 1805, during the Fulani Jihad, Daura was conquered by the Fulani warrior Malam Ishaku, who established a Fulani emirate. Rival Hausa states later emerged, and Malam Musa was installed as the new Emir of Daura. Once part of Kaduna State, Daura became part of the newly created Katsina State in 1987.On 28 February 2007, Faruk Umar Faruk ascended the throne as the 60th Emir of Daura, following the death of Emir Muhammadu Bashar dan Umaru, who had reigned for 41 years.Emir Faruk Umar Faruk
Alhaji Faruk Umar Faruk, the current Emir of Daura, continues to serve as the custodian of the emirate’s deep-rooted traditions while adapting its role in a modern Nigeria. Respected as both a cultural and spiritual leader, he symbolizes continuity, unity, and the enduring heritage of the Hausa people.Cultural & Educational Influence
